WIPM Session
Women in Plasma Medicine will host a panel discussion with Dr. Annemie Bogaerts and Dr. Cristiane Yumi Koga Ito. Panel discussion will be held on Monday, 9th September from 12:00 to 13:00.
Short bio – Annemie Bogaerts
Annemie Bogaerts (age 52) obtained her M.Sc. and PhD (both in Chemistry) at the University of Antwerp (Belgium), in 1993 and 1996, and is professor since 2003, and full professor since 2012. She is the head of the research group PLASMANT, which she started “from scratch”, and which currently counts almost 50 members (including several joint PhD students with other groups). She was not afraid to jump into new research fields, e.g., originally specialized in modeling, she started to develop an experimental lab, focusing also on various applications/commercialization. Her research group is very interdisciplinary, consisting of chemists, physicists, engineers, biologists and biomedical researchers, and her research extends from very fundamental (computer modeling) to applied and valorization-driven research. In recent years, four spin-off companies of her research group were founded. Her research focuses on plasma chemistry, plasma reactor design and plasma-surface interactions, both by experiments and modeling, for various applications, but mostly for sustainable chemistry and medical applications (cancer treatment). The latter research topic is in collaboration with the Center for Oncological Research at University of Antwerp (Evelien Smits). She obtained the Plasma Medicine Award at the Previous ICPM conference (June 2022), and in May 2022 she was selected as one of the 30 “Europe’s best chemistry professors” to recreate the iconic 1927 Solvay picture, and to help shape the future of chemical innovation in Europe. She pays special attention to good work-life balance, for herself (combining her research group with raising three kids required good time-management and organization) and her coworkers. She has quite diverse activities, not only in research, but also in teaching, services, leadership and science communication.
